Trends 2016 by Reana Jones

harvest gold

Trends, the word itself can make anyone pause in absolute fear. The first question to arise, “will I make a disastrous mistake that will haunt me later?”

We all recall the trends of the past, kitchens in Avocado Green and Harvest Gold, bathrooms in Dusty Rose and Periwinkle.

Fear not, the word trend does not have to mean you are making a mistake with a well-planned thoughtful design. Your design professional is aware of the potential pitfalls and they can help you gain the personal touches that will stand the test of time.

We each have our comfort level when planning a space, some choose to be bold and daring, others more conservative. The point you must remember is the fact that you have choices. Use the following information to gather your thoughts for your own inspiration.

According to R.I.C.K.I., 2016

(Research Institute for Cooking and Kitchen Intelligence, an industry leader for surveys)

43% of 2016 those surveyed – CAN’T STAND THEIR KITCHEN!RICKI

This is up 14% from 2015.

72% are ready to reinvest in their existing home.

3 out of 4 are ready to change their personal style completely…

This is BIG news; some of you may already fall into this category.

The two fastest growing trends in the last few years:

Transitional and Contemporarytransitional

Research also clearly shows, now more than ever customers want to express their personal style while designing their spaces.

Personality coupled with convenient living.

Buzz words repeatedly heard by potential clients during surveys, in order of importance to them:

Spacious, bright, open, organized and clean

Personal style translates to adding anything like color or themesto spaces.

We are seeing such materials as mixed metals (combinations of a variety of metals) updated and refined embellishments, cultural and style accents.contemporary

Example: Moroccan lantern and arabesque shapes in everything from lighting to rugs.

Themes are repeated style trends with recognizable influences. Two of the newest and most heavily used themes that seem to have a great appeal affecting the trend spectrum are:

Modern Rustic (or Rustic Modern) and Industrial Farmhouse

You may recognize the use of these themes with itemslike – farmhouse tables, farmhouse sinks, open shelving, exposed beams, antique style (and reclaimed) plumbing and fixture usage.

We are seeing (as kitchen and bath designers) a strong attraction to shaker styling in cabinetry, all influenced by this movement.

Color!

Color and the shift of the palette have been greatly influenced by the trends today.rustic modern

Painted finishes are up a whopping 84%!

The newest colors are a variety of soft blues and greens.

For example:

The number one color that has taken over……. grey.

Yes, grey “also known as the new brown” is serving beautifully as a fantastic new natural.

Remember the dark cherry kitchens, this year they are down 36%

Replaced in popularity by mid-tone soft browns- to medium/ light finishes.

Another happy surprise is the return of growing wood species that was once considered old fashioned. Welcome back, oak but in new cuts and finishes. We love the new depth and texture from riff cut and quarter-sawn!

Oak is reimagined and we are thrilled for the options!industrial farmhouse

Sourcing the C.M.G. 2016

(Color Marketing Group)

The trend set for everything you touch from fashion to furniture. They are also seeing the softening of the entire palette for everything to come. Watch those runways!

In addition, we are seeing lively patterns! Uses of bold geometric patterns, mix and match of materials, abstract wood grains, gloss and matte usage.

The last few years have showed the strongest signs of global influences we have ever seen, as the world becomes closely joined and travel to formally unfamiliar places and international people, choices are becoming available that never were before.

New buzz words:

Texture, heavy grain, unique materials, bohemian, freestyle, individual and cultural

Do you know what is also up?

Buyer’s remorsesoft color

And not for the reasonsyou might think.Customers who recently remodeled or completed new spaces wish they had upgraded more, added more accessories and conveniences, and yes…. You guessed it, more personality.

Technology

Tech and gadgets are here, and not going away anytime soon….strike that…ever. Technology is an integrated part of our living spaces, including the kitchen.

Docking stations, smart devices, award winning products like the award winning Senso pop-up power station.

All available at Jilco (yes, shameless plug…it was bound to happen.)

Imagine having your iPad handy for that recipe!

Another important trend to explore, multi-generational living – more families are sharing the same space. This can possibly add the need forgrey universal design to accommodate changes for all to live comfortably.

Bottom line….

What does this all mean to you?

Simply, you have choices. The conversations you share with your designer are vital towards the overall success of the project.

How do you prepare for these conversations?

How do you express your personal style?

We often see fretful expressions of frustration, potential clients intimated by where to start. I am about to give you a few hints to get you started.

Tip #1

www.houzz.comgeometric pattern

OK, we LOVE this site. Why, it’s not a vendor trying to sell you one product or another. As designers we tend to mix product, this is a conduit for us to display our finished work and get feedback from people just like you.

Use the site to save “the dream” save spaces you like, it is our job to help you marry the dream with the reality, so dream big! Get past the size of the space or “can I afford this??” We can get so much about you by seeing your dreams; this is how we make it yours.

Tip #2

Budget

Fine, it’s a scary word, right? That said, we truly want you to be comfortable financially and we would much rather meet your expectation than over design something that is unattainable. The last thing we want to do is see you as your dreams slip away and you have to settle, you will never be happy that way, neither will we. Don’t be afraid to have the conversation.

Tip #3

Floorplan

A basic floor plan of the space, include doorways and windows. If you need assistance, one of the Jilco designers would be more than happy to assist you. Call 914.248.6100 to set up an appointment.

Tip #4

Appliances (assuming a kitchen space) if you are planning new…start shopping now. We plan your kitchen space around those items, so that is a good place to start.

The combination of having these items researched and ready will give you a strong start in route to your new dream space.
